For too long now I have thought about writing, after all I’ve always enjoyed the written word so why not write myself? I happen to be very talkative, and also pretty opinionated, so really, writing some of these thoughts down seemed like the ideal place to start. Which brings us here today dear reader. My first blog. I figured I would start by telling you a little about me…
My name is Lex, I grew up just over an hours drive south of Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia, in a small place called Jimboomba (Jim-boom-bah) with two sisters and a wonderful set of parents. Throughout my childhood I always enjoyed sport and the outdoors, I even excelled at some sport from an early age… my sport of choice? Athletics, aka track and field, aka running. Fast.
I can still remember when I first joined the local Little Athletics Club (or little A’s as we liked to call it). I had always been good at running, mostly bare foot, on the grass, but this was my first real race at a club (which meant I had to wear shoes!). The event was the 400m dash. As it turns out little naïve me did not know how far 400m was, so I asked my coach. He responds with a quick witted “run until you see the people”. Simple enough I thought. BANG goes the starting gun and off I go, eager to win my first race and hopefully even make some new friends. It was around the 200m mark that I realized I may have gone off the start a little quick. I was getting breathless, but, in stubborn Lex fashion I powered on, I puffed and huffed and I crossed the finish line! To my surprise the finish line was right back where I had started. My coaches were thrilled! I’d just broken the club record they told me. I ran my first ever 400m in 1 minute and 17 seconds. Little did I know that that one 400m race would spark my athletic career and fill me with a lifelong love of all things fitness and exercise.
I may no longer be competing in Track but I am still practising fitness, in so many ways and forms that it no longer feels like work. It feels like joy and relaxation. I still strive to be better, to lift more, push more or get up that hill just a little faster. But I do it filled with love for the movement and exercise and not because I feel I have to. I want to be better and I want to live a long and happy healthy life, but we will get to all of that later.
Fast forward to the current day. I am now living a mere 3 hour drive north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in a blue collared town called Kamloops. After graduating high school I tried to do the university thing but there was something else calling. Travel. After a year or so of trying I decided to follow my heart and I packed my bags and left home to see this world. That was almost 7 years, and many moves ago.
I’ve always had this feeling that I don’t have a set place to call home, as though I needed to travel to find my home, to find my spot that I fit into in this world, a spot I am still seeking, and as I get older I wonder if I will spend my life seeking. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy. I am in a good place and so here I find myself, finally sitting down to write.
Stories, adventures, fitness and everything in between! That is what I am hoping to share with you through this extension of me, this blog.
So, until the next time.. This is me.
